The Many Things That Should Be Represented In A SHTF Bag

By Ruthie Livingston

The things that are considered as shit hitting the fan are those that disasters movies are made about. This could mean a fire coming at you from a local forest. It could be a flood, whether you are living in a flood plain or not. It could also be, if you listen to the wrong people, zombies. These natural or man made problems require the assembly of a SHTF bag.

Many people who promote these containers call them bug out bags. This is because, when you have to leave your home, you usually have very little time to accomplish this. You are actually bugging out and need stuff to survive for at least three days. This may be more than a simple bag and it must be large enough to contain material for your entire family, party or group.

The items needed for this survival will begin with water. The experts state that one gallon a day per person is needed. The presence of streams and rivers, close by, does not mean you have adequate drinking water unless you pack it. Water purification tablets are also necessary for those occasional fairly clean streams you find.

Being able to take a shower, every day or night, will be something that will have to be postponed for the time being. Your concern should be survival and a bath, in a river or stream, may be all that you can work out. A location to set up a tent or other temporary structure, close to this river may be a good idea if there is room.

Food is next in importance. You will have to pack as much as possible, given the other things that must go into this bag. Dehydrated foods are light weight and pack a lot of nutrition for their size. You will need to use a little water for these as that is what dehydrated means. A tin can stove can be made with the use of a can opener, so bring one of these.

A tent or tarp is needed for a roof. This can be erected or drooped over a fence or other post found and is vital for keeping your stuff dry. Sleeping bags are critical because you need sleep each night and whenever you are not on the run. Staying warm and dry is important for keeping morale up and gathering strength for the next days activities.

Knives and a method for keeping them sharp should be included. This item is useful for all sorts of tasks. A gun or two, for protection and the provision of game meat, is extremely helpful and will boost morale quite a bit. A first aid kit, complete with everything that you need to patch up the majority of cuts and abrasions is necessary. Disinfecting spray is something that should be included.

Everything that is included in this type of container should assist you in something very specific. That specificity is expressed in the need to survive with water, food and warmth. Everything that does not help you in this special task should be left behind, except, maybe, a paperback book or two.
