While people have been trying their hand at fishing for literally thousands of years, today the activity is mainly a strictly recreational sport for most people. Interestingly enough, one of the fastest growing areas of the sport takes place far away from the water in the form of collecting antique fishing lures. It can be a great source of pleasure for hobbyists, or even of a source of income, in some cases.

Unlike most modern equipment sold that is most often mass produced on a large scale, an older type fishing lure is normally going to be something that is handmade. There are literally millions of avid collectors, all around the planet, who currently are seeking these exquisite tackle items, considered by lure lovers to truly be a form of art. In reality, most of these will be quite different from any of the newer items of their kind.

These astounding pieces can display virtually unlimited variations of colors, composition and assembly. Most are hand painted, are generally composed of little or no plastic and are often intricately manufactured. There is a fascinating array of unique tackle that is no longer constructed or sold by popular retail stores.

As with any collectible, you will find much competition, commitment and investment in the fishing lure collecting community. Even when monetary gain is not the main factor, this definitely is a serious endeavor for all of those involved. Once a person starts, it becomes a matter of passion, culture and enjoyment.

For those wishing to become a collector of some of these fantastic antiques, there are a variety of various trading events, collection clubs and commercial dealers that can be found in places around the Internet or possibly in local publications. A great deal of these prized items can sometimes be picked up at places like estate sales, flea markets or garage sales. As with most types of collectibles, one never can predict when or where these objects could turn up.
