Making A 72 Hour Emergency Kit

By Helene Norris

Disasters, natural or man made can occur without warning. These events bring about significant losses and extensive damage to properties. It can put a lot of people in danger due to the conditions that may arise. It is important that one be prepared. One way to do so would be to make a 72 hour emergency kit.

The items that should be included are objects that are needed for survival. You can easily be cut off from food and water supplies as well as from utilities. Worse yet, you may be left injured or exposed to bad weather. This collection will therefore be very important if you want to escape possible death and reach safety.

Include food in your list. Ideally, these food items should items that can keep for a long time. It should provide nutrition. You might not be able to cook given the circumstances, it would be best if you purchase items that can be eaten immediately. Biscuits and canned goods are examples.

Water is another thing that you will need to survive. Without water, you will become weak and if you go without it for long enough, you can die. This should be easy enough since bottled water can be bought at many stores. Make sure that there is enough to last for a number of days for every family member.

Another important addition is first aid supplies. Disasters can bring about injuries. Unfortunately, you will not have access to hospitals and medication all the time. It is best to get some basic medical supplies. If one of the family members has a condition and he needs medication, then this should be included as well.

You will need a way to contact the authorities and other family members. Unfortunately, this can be pretty difficult if you will only be relying on your mobile. You should list down the numbers of family, friends you can contact, and the emergency services in your area. Cash and copies of important documents should also be kept.

To keep you comfortable, a sleeping bag should be included as well. You never know where you will get stuck. It may be in area that is exposed to the elements. You will need something to prevent exposure. Clothes and other items that can keep you warm is a good idea. There should be enough for everyone.

Other objects can also be useful in these times. A flashlight will be source of illumination when there is no electricity. You can bring a whistle so instead of shouting for help, you can just blow on it. You may also want to add a pocket knife as this can also be used for many things. Do not forget to throw in a radio so you can listen to the news.

These objects will have to be placed in a bag or container. Choose something that is easily portable just in case you have to move from one location to another. Place your 72 hour emergency kit in a place where it can easily be reached. Determine when these items will expire so you can replace them as needed.
