South Texas is very famous for deer hunting. This activity is practiced by many people in this region for recreational purposes. The two types of deer that are mostly hunted are the whitetail and the mule. The whitetail is more popular. This is because it has bigger antlers and it is also found in large numbers in this region. There were many bucks in the wild and few predators. Because of too much hunting and overgrazing, the population of the deer had reduced significantly by 1860. Conservation measures were implemented to ensure the animals did not become extinct. By 1960s the population of the bucks had become high enough for hunting to continue.

Most people use an outfitter or a guide when they want to hunt. Though this option is expensive it is popular. Many people who own the land have guided hunt operations on their ranches. Sometimes the land is leased to outfitters who then become guides. There are many advantages of using a guide when going to hunt. Guides will teach you how to shoot properly. They will also place you in good positions that will make it easier for you to make a kill.

Some ranches charge different rates according to the size of the animal that you kill. In the private ranches everything apart from licensing is handled by the guides. Hunts for the whitetail and the mule deer are done in separate places. You can hunt turkeys alongside the bucks. Hunts can go on for up to five days. Meals and accommodation can be organized if you want to hang around for several days.

Accommodation and food can be organized for if you want to spend some days in the wild. Going for hunts in the lands that are public is cheap. You do not have to pay for anything apart from your license. There are several forests in Texas that have developed and primitive grounds where visitors can camp. Trails for hiking and horse riding are also available.

There are regulations and rules when going for a hunt. Not all vehicles are suitable. There are also restrictions on the places you can visit. Take precautions when traveling in remote locations. There are areas that are famous and frequented by tourists. You can save yourself time and use the internet to figure out good spots for hunts.

There are many outfitters who can give you a good tour. You can find their contacts online and book in time so that you do not miss out on all the action. It is advisable to use a guide for the best experience. In South Texas deer hunting is a major contributor to tourism.
