Making The Most Of Haida Gwaii Adventure Tours And Travel

By Sharron Cantu

Plenty of places in the world are worth visiting once, at least in a lifetime. A hidden secret well known only to British Columbians, is the archipelago of Haida Gwaii. Many who have discovered this unique island chain through Haida Gwaii adventure tours and travel packages have never regretted it and in fact kept going back for more.

Since the area is an archipelago, or rather a group of islands, there is plenty to be had if one is thinking of activities relating to water. This area is well known primarily for the great experience of watching whales up close the whole year round.

Being in the most strategic area for whale watching, one will be able to see different species of whales up close. Depending on the season for month, one can see humpbacks, killer whales and gray whales. It is best to research this further or ask around from the locals the best schedules to see certain specific species for your tours and enjoyment.

Plenty can be done on the islands as well. There is plenty of hiking and camping to be had, and a bit of mountain biking as well on the many trails found in the islands. And fishermen will find plenty to do In the many streams that also are full of kayaking possibilities. Many more experienced travelers actually do the hiking and mountain biking in the morning, and spend the later half of the day soaking up the sand on the beaches and just relax until the sun goes down.

One can have the chance to learn more about the local populace and the culture as well. The local Haida are very friendly and easy to get along with. They are more than willing to talk to you and share with you their local heritage and customs.

On some islands are erected totem poles as a record of history and as a testament to posterity to each of the families living on the islands. One who is well travelled may likely notice that the totem poles have a remarkable similarity to those also erected in the Alaskan region. This is because the Haida also inhabit large portions of Alaska and surrounding areas, and thus their culture is very much widespread in these areas.

A full cultural experience involving a visit to each and every community in the archipelago will take nearly four days. During these four days you may visit museums, curios and craft shops, especially workshops making furniture and items using the Haida bent wood technique.

Should you wish to visit this hidden getaway, it is just a two hour flight from Toronto. One can also get to this place by boat or ferry if one decides to take the more scenic route. Either way the journey is very much worth it. Many travel agents now offer this experience for most to enjoy. Just be aware of the peak and off peak seasons so that you will be able to get the best deals that will not hurt your pocket.
