Learn More About The Corn Maze

By Iva Cannon

There are lovely things that can be created outside using nature with just a little bit of skill and imagination. A corn maze is a great example of design and nature meeting to create beautiful designs when looking down from above, but also providing fun and entertainment from the ground. You are bound to have lots of fun making your way through a maze, and mazes like this have become huge attractions for tourists over the years.

The world's largest of these mazes was named in 2010 by the Guinness Book of World Records. It is found in Dixon, California. However, it may not actually be the largest, as there is a maze of 62 acres found at Adventure Acres in a location just outside Dayton, Ohio. This maze features eight and a half miles of trails.

Farmers must plan the features of mazes very carefully before they begin planting. It is very important to consider the strength and height of the stalk in order to select the right variety of corn. The inside of the stalk must be cut properly when creating the walkways, so that regrowth does not happen where the walkway is.

One of the most damaging things to look out for is the rotting of the stalks, which is very common. This disease happens for a number of reasons. Moisture can play a part in the stalk rotting or it could be an issue with moisture. It is also very important to note when to plant during the year, as it is not at the same time as planting other crops in farming and agriculture.

There are different types of mazes to cater to various age groups. Children and families will enjoy daytime mazes, which are about eight or nine feet high when the weather is working in its favour. Depending on its size, it can take anywhere from just under half an hour to a full hour to make one's way out of the maze. It is even more fun when there are puzzles or clues along the way. This is a great idea for a kid's birthday party as well.

For teenagers, the exact same activity is made even more fun when done at night. A group of teens can experience the thrill of exploring a maze in the dark with only flashlights to guide them. Again, there could be puzzles or riddles to solve along the walkways to add an extra twist.

Adults looking to try something a little different will enjoy the experience of a haunted maze. Not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for kids, this is something no one will ever forget. It makes for a great murder mystery party or a party associated with Halloween.

Across the pond in Britain, the mazes are called maize mazes. There are quite a few of them in the eastern region of England. Farmers offer day trips for families and tourists alike, and there are often other fun things included in the visit. Families can enjoy hay rides, pony rides, petting zoos or even just have a picnic in a designated area. This is one way that farmers are able to make a supplemental income.
