Seek Out The Rich Heritage Of British Columbia At Adventurous Places To Stay In Haida Gwaii

By Stella Gay

There is a distant archipelago of remote islands located just south of the Gulf of Alaska that offer a chance to get away from the humdrum tourist spots and really enjoy nature. Many travelers fly and drive to get there. They want to see what is special about this island grouping. They discover much when arriving at the former St. Charlotte Islands. The cultures of Great Britain and the original settlers are both apparent in the lodgings and activities.

There are certainly every kind of guest house, hotel, bed and breakfast, cabin and lodges that you might expect at larger tourist destinations, but simply not as many. Those that are available, however, are quaint, clean and as varied as their owners. This is not a common resort destination, but many of the amenities found at those are also available here. Within the range of these places to stay in haida gwaii, there is the chance to venture into the natural beauty this collection of islands offers, see the native artwork, and enjoy many outdoor activities.

The Haida Nation is the culture that has existed in this place for as long as perhaps the ice age. There are two distinct clans. These are the Ravens and the Eagles. Their oral traditions, stories, songs and artwork fill the area with beauty, so tourists hope to come and see these things. In addition to the cultural heritage dating back thousands of years, there is a rich abundance of sea and land activities that make this a worthy vacation destination. Planning a trip is best done keeping in mind what you want to see and do, as that is where you will want to make your reservations for lodging.

Some intrepid travelers will journey to the mystical archipelago to experience wilderness camping. There are sites near towns and along some beaches. Some require advance reservations but others do not. Keeping in mind that this is a season activity, from about July through September will help you to plan this kind of stay.

Salmon fishers come to catch some of the largest fish possible. They plan their stays in local lodges that cater to fishermen. Guided trips for salt or fresh water fishing are scheduled with boats that are fully equipped with everything necessary for a day of sport on the sea or the rivers. Experts sail right along with visitors, assisting with bait, gear and tackle.

The small town that carries the name of the ship that brought those who would claim the islands for Great Britain is Queen Charlotte City. This is a great place to stay at bed and breakfast spots or small hotels. There are strikingly beautiful ocean views, with nice beaches and delicious farm fresh produce. Walking the local farmers market or farms is good for sight seeing, too.

Small guest houses and hotels are found in traditional Port Clemens, Masset, and Tlell. These are close to rain forest trails, beaches, and Haida artist studios.

Sandspit is the only little town located on the island of Moresby. Hotels, lodges and cabins here are rustic, with plenty of natural beauty outside. Be certain to include visits to the Haida Heritage Center and Museum or the Gwaii Haanas National Park. Consider whale watching, hiking, surfing or wilderness camping on the mystical archipelago.
