The Amigo Turnout Rug For Horses

By Marissa Velazquez

Horses need a lot of equipment and it can be quite expensive. Shopping for bargains is an excellent idea that can save the owners a lot of money. Some of the best sales are right after the holidays when stores are trying to clear out the inventory for the new year. This is probably the best time to shop for an Amigo turnout blanket to keep a horse or pony warm and clean all winter long.

Some breeds of horses, particularly thoroughbreds, do not grow a thick winter coat. They often need some extra help to stay warm and getting them a thick rain proof rug for when they are turned out in the field is an excellent idea. Owners will not have to worry about finding their animals shivering in the rain or snow again.

For many years horse clothing was very difficult to take care of. The materials were stiff and could not be washed. This meant that they had a very short life and many were ripped and quickly had to been thrown away. Horses tend to play rough and will often grab the other horses rugs and pull on them sharply. In addition, they quickly rotted and were not waterproof.

Using a good turn out blanket will also save hours of grooming time. Horses that are ridden in the winter are often clipped to remove their heavy winter coat and prevent excessive sweating. They will need several blankets to compensate for their loss of coat. A good water proof outdoor rug is essential. There are many different thicknesses of blanket available.

A thin skinned horse such as a thoroughbred will need one of the heavy weight rugs and maybe even a liner underneath. A more rugged breed of horse will probably be fine with a lighter weight set of rugs. Even when they are in the barn they will still need stable blankets suitable to their breed.

Horses should be turned out to pasture every day. This allows them to stretch their legs, get some exercise and socialize with their friends. It is very bad for the animals, both physically and mentally to be cooped out for too long. However, owners that want to ride during the winter will spend hours getting their mount clean and free of dust. Putting on a turnout rug first will save hours of hard work.

Before purchasing a new turnout rug it is crucial to measure the horse or pony properly. Most measurements are taken from the front of the chest all the way to the back of the tail. If the owner is not sure how to do this the customer service department will be able to help. They can then refer to the sizing chart and get the best fit for their particular animal.

Many owners like to get a detachable neck cover for their horse. This provides extra protection for animals that have to live outside all the time. It also helps to keep them clean and save a lot of grooming time. Those who are competing in winter shows should invest in a range of Amigo turnout rugs for their horses to ensure they are clean and dry in even the worst weather.
