Selecting The Proper Horse Rugs

By Katrina Wheeler

Protection from severe weather is extremely important to animal lovers. Horses occasionally need assistance cooling down, warming up, staying dry and staying warm. The purpose of horse rugs is to provide that assistance without restricting the animal's ability to move around.

You might wonder how you would keep a rug or blanket on an animal that is so large and active. Most blankets have straps and clips to attach around the chest, under the belly and additional straps that go around and between the hind legs for additional security. They come in several different sizes, colors and weights. The heavier weighted covers, are for use during the winter months when the weather is very cold. Lighter weight sheets are for the spring and summer months, many times to protect them from irritating insects.

During the winter months, your animals will be able to stay warm and dry using these coverlets. Most are warm and water proof in order to prevent your animal from becoming wet during snow or rain. Additional protection is also available by attaching a neck cover.

There are many different types and styles of rugs and blankets to choose from. There can also be a difference in the weight of the fabrics used for this protection. There are stable, turnout, fly, water proof and cooling blankets as well as anti-sweat sheets. Each has a very distinctive use.

During the winter, when your animal is out to pasture, a turnout cover is an excellent option. Choose one that is rated based on the weather conditions appropriate for your climate. During the summer months many people choose to use fly sheets for protection against pesky flies. After an intense workout, you might choose to use a cooling blanket to assist in cooling the core temperature of your animal until it reaches the appropriate level. There are blankets and rugs for many different purposes.

It is imperative that your horse be dry before blanketing. Placing a blanket on a damp animal can cause him to become ill. If he is damp, use an anti-sweat sheet to absorb moisture before placing a turnout or stable blanket on him. Make sure you remove the anti-sweat sheet first, otherwise the exterior blanket would hold the cold, damp sheet against him which could cause severe problems.

Blanketing an animal too soon can keep it from growing a winter coat. It is best to allow the winter coat to grow first. Use the blanket only when it is absolutely necessary. If you use a blanket too early in the season, your horse will have to wear it until warm weather returns.

Protecting your horse from problems caused by different seasons has never been easier. Determine his needs. Consider the climate. Each different season will bring different needs. Be attentive. Take your time when deciding what type, weight and size of coverlet your animal will need. Although it serves a physical purpose, horses look adorable when wearing horse rugs.
